🌊Why do mudflows and floods occur in Tajikistan?
Tajikistan is a mountainous country, where steep slopes and melting glaciers create the risk of sudden floods of water and mud.
Main causes:
• Heavy rainfall and snowmelt;
• Deforestation and soil degradation;
• Unstable mountain slopes and lack of drainage systems.
⚠️What is a mudflow?
A mudflow is a powerful stream of water, mud, rocks, and debris that rapidly descends from the mountains.
It can sweep away everything in its path: houses, roads, crops, and even cars.
Even a small stream can cause enormous damage if not stopped in time.
🏠How mudflows and floods affect people
Every year, mudflows and floods in Tajikistan lead to:
• Destruction of homes and infrastructure;
• Loss of crops and farmland;
• threat to human life and health, especially in rural areas.
Many families are left without homes and sources of income.
🌱How to reduce the risk
To reduce the impact of natural disasters:
• strengthen riverbanks and ravines;
• avoid building houses near riverbeds and on slopes;
• plant trees—the roots hold the soil;
• monitor weather forecasts and service warnings.
🤝The Role of the PO "Bonuvoni Fardo"
The PO "Bonuvoni Fardo" is conducting an awareness campaign and educating residents on protective measures as part of the "CLIMATE CHANGE INFORMATION CAMPAIGN" project, with funding from the Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism.
For example, as part of environmental and social projects, people are taught:
• what to do in the event of a flood threat;
• how to strengthen their farms and land;
• where to turn for help.
